Chromatographic separation, as a physical method of mixture separation and analysis, has a wide range of applications. The components of the mixture can be separated into two phases: one is the stationary phase located in the chromatography column and the other mobile phase. The mobile phase flows in a liquid or gaseous state.
How does chromatographic separation work?
The mixture of different components is injected into the liquid or gas chromatography process. Various separation and chromatography solvents are pumped into the chromatography system at different speeds. According to the magnitude of the interaction with the separation and chromatography solvents, the mixed substances can be separated. The smaller the affinity of the molecule with the stationary phase, the shorter the residence time in the chromatography column, and vice versa.
What are the important and special features of chromatographic separation?
In the chemical and biological process industries, it is necessary to remove impurities from a complex mixture and separate a certain product. This is an important step (downstream/purification) in the entire stream industry chain to produce the required purity of the product.
Nowadays, various industries have many options to achieve the above goals. Chromatographic separation methods have been used in many special production fields for decades, and there are a lot of reasons to verify that chromatographic separation methods are a special and optional separation method.
First of all, complex mixtures can be separated with high precision, including very complex molecular structures, such as proteins, which can be separated gently by chromatography. In principle, any soluble or volatile substance can be purified. If the appropriate adsorbent and carrier medium/mobile phase are used, the corresponding process parameters (temperature, pH, flow rate, conductivity, etc.) are controlled.
The chromatographic separation process is ideal for separation and purification of sensitive products, and is especially suitable for the pharmaceutical field. Users request explosion-proof type
